Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are serious, complex and devastating conditions that can have serious consequences for physical and emotional health, productivity, and relationships. Though the exact cause of eating disorders is unknown, it is generally believed to be a combination of biological, psychological, and possibly environmental conditions that contribute to the development of these illnesses.

Some individuals restrict eating and others binge and purge. Eating disorders are potentially life-threatening conditions that affect a person’s emotional and physical health. The earlier a person with an eating disorder seeks treatment, the greater the likelihood of physical and emotional recovery.

More than 30 million people in the US suffer from eating disorders. These folks display high levels of anxiety which leads to over-activity of brainwave functioning. Characteristic of people with eating disorders are obsessive and repetitive thinking, and compulsiveness. Neurofeedback can help individuals better self-regulate. As the CNS is calmed with training, anxiety and compulsivity can decrease as well as other behaviors that result from overwhelming anxiety.
